The method

What is electrolysis?

A hair removal method in which a fine probe is placed into the hair follicle and a small electric current damages the tissue that grows the hair. Each hair is treated individually.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Yes — electrolysis is officially recognised as a permanent hair removal method, because it destroys the hair follicle. Several visits are still needed, and hormonal changes can later trigger new hair growth.

Does electrolysis work on light, grey and red hair?

Yes. Electrolysis works through the follicle, not the hair pigment, so it suits hair of any colour, including fine facial hair.

How is electrolysis different from laser and IPL?

Laser and IPL work through hair pigment, so they suit dark hair best. Electrolysis does not need pigment: the energy goes straight into the follicle.

Can electrolysis help if laser did not?

Often, yes. If laser left light, grey or fine hairs behind, electrolysis can reach exactly those, because hair colour does not matter to it.

The treatment

Does electrolysis hurt?

Most people feel a brief tingle or warmth at each hair. Sensitivity depends on the area and the person; a numbing cream can be used if needed.

What does the skin look like afterwards?

The treated area may be briefly red or slightly swollen, and small scabs sometimes form. This is normal and usually settles quickly if you leave them alone.

Results

How many sessions will I need, and how long will it take?

The full result usually takes 12–24 months of regular visits, depending on the area, hormones, hair thickness and regularity.

Why are several visits needed?

Hair grows in cycles and only part of it is visible at any time. The rest appears later and is treated at later visits.

Can the hair grow back?

A destroyed follicle does not grow hair again. Hormones can, however, trigger new hairs elsewhere, so extra visits are sometimes needed.
